The Saigon Times Daily Sunday, Jun 23, 2019,10:56 (GMT+7)

HCMC – A slew of surveillance cameras have been installed in front of headquarters of HCMC’s and districts’ People's Committees, the U.S. and China Embassies and parks in HCMC as a result of the 18-month implementation of a smart city project, the local media reported.

The municipal government on June 22 held a conference to review and evaluate the result of the smart city project after 18 months in the 2017-2020 period, with a vision toward 2025.

A source from the conference said that the project brought a positive achievement in some localities, with District 1 having piloted a smart city monitoring center at the headquarters of the government. The center merged the data of some 750 surveillance cameras from the police stations in 10 wards and some residential areas.

Apart from upgrading three cameras installed on three public service vehicles of three wards of Tan Dinh, Ben Nghe and Nguyen Thai Binh, District 1 invested and installed modern and new cameras at essential sites to serve security tasks.

After the 18-month trial basis, the camera system successfully supported District 1 with guidance and monitoring tasks and helped the government handle social disorder, especially on holidays.

In addition, the city saw District 12 integrate over 600 existing cameras at residential zones. District 12 also applied information technology such as the residential area management system, the document management software and the planning management information system to urban and natural resource managing activities.

Speaking at the conference, Le Quoc Cuong, deputy director of the HCMC Department of Information and Communications, said that the city had merged the data of over 1,000 surveillance cameras from the municipal Department of Transport and the people’s committees of districts 1 and 12 as well as Phu Nhuan and Go Vap districts during the 18-month implementation.

Addressing the conference, Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan said that the agencies, departments and districts in the city should share experience in implementing the project in the past 18 months, in addition to presenting difficulties and bottlenecks faced during the implementation and proposing solutions.

Nhan said that the priority is to synchronize the camera installation of schools, enterprises, households and hospital.

Besides this, the secretary asked the agencies and departments to reevaluate the result of implementing the project and forecast achievements to be seen in late 2020.
